McNelis Families in Minnesota
George McNellis (1804-1880) family in Inver
Grove, MN. He and his wife Susan came to MN in 1853 with their
children George, Anthony, James and Bridget who had married
John McGrorty. Anthony married a Esther Egan and had
seven children: Mary,1856, Susan,1858, Julie,1860, George,1861,
Kate,1864 and Anthony,1867. Family oral tradition maintains
that the family were weavers in Donegal. The name Inver Grove
was chosen by Bridget McGroraty's husband to reflect
the area where many of the original settlers came. Many of
the families in the area seem to have come through New Brunswick,
Maine, Vermont, or Ohio before settling in Minnesota. Reference

Kevin McGrorty of Kirkintilloch,
Scotland writes, I think our family history has been traced
quite far back, but what I know of this is sketchy at best.
Apparently, our family name was changed some time in our history
from the more well-known McGrory, and I believe our family
originally came from the Outer Hebridies, before they became
part of Scotland. My descendants were sold to Ireland as highly
trained mercenaries, where the family remained until the infamous
potato blight of the early 1900's. During this, the family
moved back to Scotland, instead of America like so many of
the Irish.
