Eustace "Red" McGrorty
November 14, 1912 - January 19, 2003

Eustace "Red" McGrortyRed was born in Dumfies, Scotland to Peter and Janet McGrorty. He had two brothers, George and Jack and a sister Isabelle, all deceased. Reds father worked as a groom for an English Lord. As was customary Red was named after the Lord of the Land, Sir Eustace. Peter, Reds father was a hero of WWI. His father was a member of a Calvary Regiment known as "the Scotch Ladies from Hell" because of their kilts... His father received the Victorian Cross and Mons star for the Battle of the Mons. He was one of only five survivors of the regiment. They immigrated to the US in 1917. They chose to live in the Los Angeles, California area.

Red met Vera, his "Sweet pea" and they were married in Minden, Nevada on September 5, 1936. They had two Sons, Larry, an Airline Pilot and Stan, a Geologist, who passed in July, 2002. Reds first job was working in an ice cream factory. Vera refused to marry him until he got a real job. Red went to work for the Department of Water and Power, City of Los Angeles. He was an electrical repairman. Red was above all a wonderful husband and father supporting and guiding his family in all their endeavors. Red was a volunteer to every organization. He was a Scoutmaster, De Molay and 4-H leader. He spent a lot of his time at Hoover Dam in Boulder, Nevada building and repairing generators. He advanced to Foreman of the Electrical Repair Shop before he retired after 36 years in 1972.

Vera, "Sweet pea", who passed away last February 13, retired also in 1972 from USC where she was the Game Management Director. They moved to Newcastle, California near their extended family the Labries. They bought a travel trailer and set out to see the USA. They had an adventurous nature. Early on in their marriage, they pack-trained many times, into the High Sierras of California near Bishop.

Red loved fishing and the animals of nature. He loved the Twin Lakes area near Bridgeport, California. They drove the Al-can Highway twice to Alaska to visit their son, Stan and his family. They crossed the USA to Newfoundland, Maine, down to Florida and across the Southern US. They both had a hobby of meeting people and they met many. They always traveled with friends "Matey", Gladys and later Blanche, the Giblin family. They traveled to Scotland, Red's birthplace and visited the War Memorial of his father in Edenboro. They loved their family and toted their grand kids on many trips.

They settled in Salem 20 years ago and that became their base of operations. Red is survived by his son, Larry and his wife Patti of Salem; daughter-in-law Patty of Homer, Alaska: grandsons, Mike and Kevin of Portland, Sean of Homer, Alaska; granddaughters, Dawn of Homer, Alaska and Shannon of Lathrop, California. Red has three wonderful great grandsons whom he was very proud of, Chase, Quinn and Joey.
